Short bowel syndrome is a group of problems that affect people who have had half or more of their small intestine removed. The most common reason to remove part of the small intestine is to treat Crohn's disease — a condition that causes inflammation throughout the digestive system and often results in severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding in the digestive tract, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
