About half of all Americans don't get enough magnesium in their diets, and that's a shame, considering doing so maintains healthy bones and fights osteoporosis naturally, especially as patients age.
In a study of more than 2,000 seniors between ages 70-79, researchers found only 25 percent got enough magnesium. Another interesting number: A patient's body mineral density (BMD) jumps 2 percent for every 100 milligrams of magnesium he or she consumes daily.
Overall, white men and women got more magnesium in their diets than black women or men -- unfortunately thanks to taking supplements-- and had better BMD.
The best way to boost your dietary intake of magnesium: Buy and eat as many green leafy vegetables grown organically as you can.
Just a reminder, another way you can build better bone density is to maintain a healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fats in your diet.
