US child murder suspect arrested in Thailand

BANGKOK, Aug 17 (TNA) - A decade-long search for an American suspected of killing a six-year-old child 'beauty queen' in Colorado 10 years ago ended in Bangkok Wednesday when Thai immigration police apprehended the middle-aged man at the request of the US government.

John Mark Karr, 41, was arrested by Thai Immigration Bureau police in a downtown Bangkok apartment Wednesday afternoon following a request by US security officials on August 11, Thai Immigration Bureau police commissioner Lt-Gen Suwat Tumrongsriskul said in a press conference on Thursday.

According to Gen. Suwat, the American authorities had informed Thailand that Mr. Karr had fled the US to hide, first in Malaysia, and then in Thailand. As the latest development, a court in Boulder, Coloradoissued arrest warrants for the suspect on August 16 on charges of abduction and murder.

He said that the arrested suspect confessed to strangling to death the then six-year-old 'beauty queen', JonBenet Ramsey in her home in the US state of Colorado on December 26, 1996.

Mr. Karr left Penang, Malaysia, and entered Thailand on June 6 this year. He was in the process of applying for an English teaching job in Bangkok, Gen. Suwat said.Initially, the suspect said that he wanted to kidnap the young girl for ransom but his demand was not met; so he strangled the kidnapped girl.

The immigration bureau chief said that he had ordered Mr. Karr's visa to be revoked, and that the man, found not to have committed any wrongdoing in Thailand, will be extradited for trial in the US.
