Those who question the very existence of female sexual dysfunction as a valid

Those who question the very existence of female sexual dysfunction as a valid medical disorder characterize it as a fabrication of the pharmaceutical industry designed to increase drug makers’ profits. These critics warn that by focusing on the medical and pharmacological issues of female sexual functioning, we misdirect our energies, and that interventions should be focused on mental and emotional conflicts and bad relationships.

In my view, proponents of this view are plainly misinformed; at worst, they promote a serious misconception about the underlying causes of female sexual dysfunction. They act as though there’s an “either/or” answer to women’s sexual problems. The truth is that most sexual dysfunctions, whether male or female, are usually the result of biological, psychological, and relational problems. Attempts to misrepresent the legitimate biologic dimensions of female sexual dysfunction as a conspiracy of big drug companies are a disservice to patients who suffer with these conditions. It also suggests to me that these critics’ agendas are based on something other than objective science.
